The control of installed maps is not well explained in the user manuals. It's an important feature as if 2 maps of the same area are loaded, for example, NZ Topo for Garmin maps & NZ Open GPS Project Street Maps. The topo roads don't overlay the Open Project roads exactly at all times.

This results (when zoomed in close) in 2 roads running parallel. I reckon it's best to have the topo maps switched off until they're needed.

To turn the topo maps off, go to the Map page > press Menu > select Setup Map > toggle to the i icon > press Menu and you'll see the names of the installed map products with Show or Hide beside them.

If there’s a line that says Hide NZ Topo and you want to hide them, toggle down to the line and press Enter. The maps will now be hidden and if you were to go back to the map products page you’d see the listing now says Show NZ Topo.

This means the topo are hidden at present but will be Showing once the line is highlighted and Enter is pushed. Likewise the Open Project maps can be hidden if you just want to see Topo.

Notice that the Open Project maps have 2 entries - one is for the actual streets and the other (the lower one) is for the POI (Points of Interest) file with all the place names, shops, service stations etc.

Control of installed maps on a 76S is difficult

Again, when 2 different NZ map products are installed the road won't exactly overlay each other but in the 76S (and probably similar age models) the control of maps is made much more difficult as Garmin do not provide a Hide option for each product.

After loading (say) Open Projects + NZ Topo you'll then likely want to turn Topo off until they are actually required. To turn the Topo maps off press Menu twice > toggle to MapSource Info & press Enter > and you'll see the names of all the individual map tiles, each with a check box for turning on or off.

You have the option here of manually un-ticking the topo check boxes or - Press Menu > the installed map products are listed, prefixed by the word Show.

Unfortunately this system does not have the Hide prefix available that’s on later models. So to turn off Topo only, it’s first easiest to use Show None by toggling to it and pressing Enter.

Then press Menu again > Toggle to the Show NZ Open GPS and press Enter. Do this to both NZ Open GPS entries.
Topo maps are now hidden.

Note:

• The Topo maps have streets as well but only for the area of Topo installed of course.

• The NZ Open GPS maps have 2 map product entries – one is for the Points of Interest (POI) which are place names and the other is for the actual streets.
