Post subject:  Error in road near Rotorua

Gary:

Just noticed the following when driving south of Rotorua on SHW5 the other weekend when for some reason I had the topos on rather than street routing maps. This road has been realligned for several years now. Infact there is such a large cutting there that the contour lines are probably different now.

I notice that new allignment is on all the other gps maps that I have but not yours.

Not a major issue since yours are topos rather than road maps , but an issue anyway.

This pic is centred on E2801274 N6321285 NZMG

I've had a look - the LINZ data has not been updated either yet.

Unfortunately, it's not practicable to make manual changes to the maps. If I was to make a change, it would be too difficult to keep track of what changes had been made, and to what map, and when, and that would mean manually checking each map when it gets updated.

I'd guess that other maps have been either manually updated, or possibly based on a later road dataset.

Like you say, if you have the Autorouting maps - it isn't such a problem.
I've passed road errors onto LINZ a few times - they don't seem that interested in updating them.

Hi Gary, just read below:

"Unfortunately, it's not practicable to make manual changes to the maps. If I was to make a change, it would be too difficult to keep track of what changes had been made, and to what map, and when, and that would mean manually checking each map when it gets updated."

Are you interested in getting map errors (GTmap errors, not Linz) if I spot them? Bob.

Yes - absolutely.
(sorry about the delay in spotting this question. I must have missed it last time)

Map error. Windy Point shown at 2537170E 5984258N. Should be 2538669E 5984285N (approx), where the track goes round the point of the spur. About 2kms away. Bob.

Hmm - that's a LINZ error. I'll let them know (unless you want to)

A typical LINZ error. A lot of the features in the LINZ database are actually the location of the name of the feature of the 1:50,000 map series. If you have a look at the map you will probably see that the location is actually the bottom left hand corner of the W in Windy Point.

The data has improved over the years but obviously there are still some reminants

Another one is Parry's Lookout near the summit of Mt Ngongotaha which I see doesn't actually appear on Gary's Maps but is on the NZ Open Map Project routing maps.

The lookout should actually be posted on the summit. Actually it shouldn't be there at all because the lookout was removed over 20 years ago.,

I must log that one on that forum.
